New Year's Eve in Bangkok

Perhaps the most deliberately hedonistic of holidays, New Year's Eve is the culmination of the Lunar year, and time to squeeze in the last of guilty pleasures. Like everywhere else, people in Bangkok head out on the town, searching for a final fix. Seeking some culinary indulgences before the beginning of a rigorous macrobiotic diet, or one last riotous night of hard-core partying? This is the night traditionally set aside for total indulgence, to bask in all the sinful pleasures that delight us. So, break out the stilettos and hit the town, for the City of Angels - contrary to the meaning of its official name, 'Krung Thep' - harbors only heathens on New Year's Eve...Celebrating New Year's Eve in Bangkok can be truly spectacular, and there's something for everyone. Thailand is also possibly the only country in the world that welcomes a new year no less than three times annually! The Chinese New Year is greeted at the end of January, while the legendary Thai New Year (Songkran) is celebrated over several days in April. Over the years, the Western New Year has been accepted as yet another occasion to party.

Where to Celebrate 2009: Bangkok has many places for tourists who come from other towns, provinces or even many countries in the world.

If you are one of them bring your family members, lovers, friends or even co-workers to celebrate is coming up 2009 together.

Most of people will celebrate at the Central World Shopping Mall, Click here to see more places to go!

On December5th, 2008, His Majesty the King will celebrate his 81st birthday. King Bhumibol Adulyadej is highly regarded in Thailand as a fatherly figure. His birthday is a national holiday and also father’s day.

A few weeks prior to the King’s birthday, Thai officials will begin to display the King’s portrait on the government buildings, schools, and houses, as well as cover them up with royal symbols.

Born in 1927 at Mount AuburnHospital, Cambridge, Massachusetts,USA. His Majesty is the youngest child in the family of three. King Bhumibol ascended the throne in 1946 making him the 9th king of the Chakri dynasty.  He is considered to be the world’s longest-serving head of state and the longest-serving king in the Thai monarchy. Sincehis ascension to the throne, His Majesty has made significant contributions to the lives of the Thai people, especially those in rural areas. He focused strongly on sustainable agriculture. His researches along with his dedication led him to invent the “Chai Pattana Machine” – The Chai Pattana Aerator Model Rx 2. It is used and operated in polluted waterways. He received a registered patent for this invention, making him the first member of the Royal Family to be granted a patent.

One of His Majesty’s greatest contributions also includes the Sufficiency Economy, whereby the Thai government places a greater emphasis on human development and to ensure that both urban and rural provinces receive equal attention from all governmental units.

Over the years, His Majesty has been a recipient of several awards. A few of them includes the Royal Victorian Chain, the British Monarch award; the first United Nations Human Development Lifetime Achievement Award; and the Bronze Wolf Award – Scout Movement’s highest award.

Therefore, on December 5th of every year, Thai citizens take part in activities that show their affection for their King. Some may go to the temple and pray for the King’s health or some may go to Sanam Luang to listen to concerts dedicated to His Majesty.

In addition, children at local schools will participate in activities that are related to His Majesty’s birthday. Some may write up essays about His Majesty’s achievements and some may take a trip to the Royal Palace, or make a father’s day card and send it to their fathers. Therefore, it may be helpful if you familiarize yourself with Father's Day activities in your school and the life story, as well as achievements, of His Majesty the King.
